Welcome to the Analysis Forum

There are four distinct types of posts:

  1. Incidents to view and discuss possible decisions
  2. Podcasts where I speak over videos discussing the relevant rules that should be applied
  3. Coaching discussions where I look at movements and suggest how movements could be best executed to abide by the rules
  4. Goodies - where great shots or rallies are featured

As a member, you have unrestricted access to all of the above.

For the incidents, you are invited to have your say and give your point of view and decision that you would have made. Do not be afraid to disagree with my call or, indeed, that of the match referee :). Decisions are always subjective and depend on how you, the ref, interpret the players' movements and motives. However, it is very important that whatever decision you do make, it is based on a rule that you can quote to the players to let them know that you know your stuff and have applied a rule - such as "you played it, no let" for playing through interference or "no let, you could not have made a good return" are two examples. It is always good to use actual words from the rules, where possible.

Don't forget that referees are supposed to make decisions based on certainty, so don't be afraid to tell players that you were uncertain (for whatever reason - maybe unsighted - it was too fast etc) - and ask the players to play a let for that reason. Players should accept that honesty, especially as that is correct procedure within the rules.

I hope you enjoy this forum and I look forward to reading your contributions.
